This is a vintage original 11x14 in. US linen-finish title lobby card from the classic 1930's crime drama/romance, CONFESSION , released in 1937 by Warner Bros. And directed by Joe May. Kay Francis stars as an aging, down-on-her-luck singer who murders a respectable composer. While on trial, she slowly gives-in and explains her crime, as she and her victim had a complicated history together. This title lobby card from Confession is considered one of the three best Kay Francis title cards the other two being from Mandalay (1934) and The House on 56th Street (1933).
The image consists solely of a large profile portrait shot of Kay Francis (as Vera Kowalska) with her head titled upwards as she gazes upwards in a look of redemption, which is complimented by the beautiful blue background with the film's title in red. This title lobby card features a beautiful linen finish that was a characteristic of Warner Bros. Fortunately, this example is in near-perfect condition and is completely unrestored. There are no pinholes, tears, stains, or flaws of any kind.
In addition, this title lobby card also has not one but two of the best provenances in the hobby: The Michael R. Director Joe May was so determined to make this a close remake of the German film Mazurka (1935) that he kept a print of Mazurka on the set and frequently ran sections of it, to the annoyance of the new film's cast.
In addition to copying the German original shot-by-shot in many scenes, this film also reuses the original score and songs. Distribution rights to the original German film but shelved it in favor of this remake.
According to studio records, producer producer Henry Blanke wanted Bette Davis for the lead in this film, and wanted Warner Baxter for the role played by Basil Rathbone. Lola Lane did a screen test for the role of Xenia.
