THE OUTLAW Original 1946 Title Lobby Card, 11 x 14, C6.5 Fine Plus Condition

This is the Original (1sh) Title Lobby Card THE OUTLAW. It was distributed by United Artists to promote the movie when it was released in 1946. The movie was completed in 1941 but ran into censorship issues. It was first released in 1943 for one week, but was pulled back due to controversy related to its "lewdness" that Howard Hughes himself had generated for publicity. The resulting controversy generated enough interest to get The Outlaw into the theaters for one week in 1943, when it was pulled due to violations of the Production Code.

It was finally released widely on April 23, 1946, when United Artists premiered the film in San Francisco, when it became a box office hit. See below for more information. His Title Lobby Card is not a reprint nor a reproduction. The movie stars Jane Russell, Jack Beutel , Thomas Mitchell, Walter Huston , Mimi Aguglia, Joe Sawyer, Gene Rizzi, John Howard, and Ben Johnson.

It was directed by Howard Hughes and Howard Hawks. This unrestored movie Lobby Card measures 11" x 14".

It comes with an unattached stiff cardboard backing. This original Title Lobby Card is graded C6.5 Fine Plus. Original movie Lobby Cards are graded as follows from the top down: C10 (Mint), C9 (Near Mint), C8 (Very Fine), C7 (Fine/Very Fine), C6 (Fine or Very Good), C5 (Good to Very Good), C4 (Good), etc. The Title Lobby Card has an excellent main appearance and is immediately ready for framing and display. The flaws that are described on this listing are not obtrusive to the appearance of the Lobby Card or otherwise appear along the borders of the Lobby Card. Proper framing could help alleviate these flaws along the border including the 2 of paper missing at the bottom left border area.

The main image - including Ms. Jane Russell - are generally unaffected by any flaws; it may have weathered a bit and lost a little shine but it still delivers a tremendous image of an iconic actress. We believe that the Title Lobby Card THE OUTLAW has significant investment value given its star power, overall appearance, and popularity and high value of the original movie poster One Sheet (27" x 41") of this movie. We have not seen too many original 1946 Title Lobby cards, Lobby Cards, One Sheets or other of THE OUTLAW and thus feel that it is a relatively rare piece indeed. Note: THE OUTLAW film was completed in 1941 at which time a number or original movie posters were distributed.

But the movie ran into censorship issues. Here is the description of the circeumstancess found on Wiki.. Although the film was completed in February 1941, Hughes had trouble getting it approved by Hollywood Production Code Administration.

Due to its emphasis on and display of Russell's breasts. The Production Administration set the standard for morally acceptable content in motion pictures and they ordered cuts to the film. Hughes reluctantly removed about 40 feet, or a half-minute, of footage that prominently featured Russell's bosom. However, Century-Fox cancelled their agreement with Hughes to release The Outlaw.

Hughes stood to lose millions of dollars. Ever the resourceful businessman, he schemed to create a public outcry for his film to be banned.

Hughes had all his managers call ministers, women's clubs and housewives telling them about the'lewd picture' Hughes was about to release starring Jane Russell. The public responded by protesting and trying to have the film banned, which turned into just the publicity Hughes needed to create demand for the film and get it released. It was finally released widely on 23 April 1946, when United Artists. Premiered the film in San Francisco, when it became a box office hit. If you have any questions, please let me know.
